It was so in ancient times, and I fear it is still so today. Virtue makes difficulties for those who are not particularly chosen. You have to make an effort to go up, but you sink without effort. God always has to pull, it falls to the devil of his own accord. He strides slowly like old women with withered, averted faces. No ray breaks the darkness of his eyes. He does not see how the clouds build mountains. The forests are green and the skies are blue; he does not feel the lovely color magic.

And for once his soul becomes light: fragrant breezes breathe through the meadows. Then he has to raise his cold arms and is surrendered to the warm winds and tolerates the embrace blissfully, mutely. And more intimately the breezes fan him and make his rigid mouth smile and are like gospel to him. The gates creak and then let us go. The seagulls cry. We are still from silence and from kneeling. The green river roars with splendor and swells with power. we go and go The world becomes a dance in silence and wanting nothing. Soon the peas will bloom where we swing our picks.
