Child Funeral – Funeral Service for Children – Incomprehensible Father in heaven! We complain to you of our desperation!
The loss of a child is the most incomprehensible thing life can impose on us. When a small life is lost before it could begin, a void remains that no words can fill. Master Reding, himself a father of three children, knows the fragility of such moments. He accompanies parents and relatives with silent presence, mindfulness, and a deep compassion that grows from experience and faith.
The Star Child funeral is more than a farewell – it is a silent prayer, a plea for comfort, for meaning, for hope where the heart seems broken. Master Reding coordinates the ceremony with the parents – simple, loving, and with trust in heaven, where every lost child has its place.
Prayer and Meditation
Father in heaven, you have taken my child from me. I cannot say, 'Your will be done, for it is wise and good.' But I beg you: Take away my indifference and disinterest. Let me feel the warmth and sunshine again, and the coolness of the rain.
In such moments, nothing remains but prayer—not as a ready-made answer, but as a cry from the depths of the heart. The words of pain and doubt may be spoken. For in the lament already lies the hope that God hears, even if we don't understand him.
Lord, when will you warm my frozen heart,
when will you give me back a piece of life?
Prayer is the path through the darkness. It keeps the connection open between heaven and earth, between the living and the child who continues to shine—as a star, as a memory, as a silent light.
Incomprehensible Father in heaven
We lament our despair to you.
You have taken our child to yourself.
It's difficult for us to submit to your will.
Help us, we are at the end of our strength.
These words are spoken during the ceremony – not as a mandatory prayer, but as an honest struggle for comfort. Master Reding guides us through this moment with a silent language that leaves room for tears, for silence, and for what parents carry deep in their hearts.
We mourn our star child. We will miss them deeply. But we place them in your hands and know they are safe in your love.
The Star Ritual – A Sign of Love and Remembrance
At the conclusion of the ceremony, the parents light a small star candle – a light symbolizing the child's soul. This light is carefully placed in a bowl of water, as a sign that life continues to flow and is sustained. Other families choose to release a white flower, which floats away on the water or is carried away by the wind – a silent symbol that love knows no boundaries.
Master Reding accompanies this moment with a short meditation – on the light that remains and on the child who has now become a star.
Be a star in the sky,
to show us the way.
You remain in our hearts –
still, shining, eternal.
Accompaniment and Design
Master Reding, Abbot of Nigredo Monastery, designs each child's funeral in close consultation with the parents. The location, music, texts, and rituals are chosen individually – whether in the cemetery, in the garden, on a meadow, or by the water. What matters is not the form, but the truthfulness of the moment.
He creates space for grief without stifling it, and space for hope without forcing it. Thus, the funeral becomes a quiet, sacred moment in which pain, love, and faith touch one another.
